Two 6’ x 4’ Upper School garden beds provide herbs and veggies to the school kitchen. An aquaponics garden is currently under construction. The system will produce greens at regular intervals to supplement the school lunch salad bar and fresh fish on a limited basis. Under the terms of an ongoing research project the upper school engineering program is growing Jatropha curcas, an oilseed crop. When mature, (2-3 years) the seeds will be harvested, pressed and used to fuel the special vehicles, which are currently in development. A Middle School fruit orchard was planted in the fall of 2010 and is watered weekly by the Middle School Garden Committee. One of the Upper School “winterim program” options in February 2011 was dedicated to helping Lokelani Intermediate school in Kihei build a school garden. Here is another example of a public school-independent school partnership in the school garden area.
