Description:

The garden was initiated in 2007 as part of the project based emphasis of the MPA curriculum. In 2009 the community created raised garden boxes and a drip irrigation system. The program involves the lower school preschool through fifth grade, middle school sixth grade, and high school students who are interested in organic gardening. Projects within the garden include insect studies (preschool), controlled factors (sun and water) second grade, and vegetal variances of seeds (multiple grades). High points include when children eat the produce, take items home, report their reactions to their garden experiences, and when their parents show their support for the program. There is currently a “Green Club” for grades 3-8 that meets weekly and works in reforestation and the local community garden as well as in the local farmer’s taro fields. Challenges include sustaining projects after the units are completed and summer maintenance.
