Description:

King Kamehameha III is in the beginning stages of their garden program which presently includes 12 classes with 1-3 hours of garden work per week. Garden components include aquaponics, composting, fruit trees, a native plant garden, four raised vegetable/herb beds and one permaculture herb spiral garden. In the 2011-2012 school year King Kamehameha III took part in the pilot curriculum development series, “The Garden as the Classroom” with 10 sessions that teach the basics of beginning gardening–teaching the children about healthy soils, composting, how to plant, what plants need, permaculture, and an introduction to nutrition in the garden. The “Garden as the Classroom” lessons will eventually be shared with Elementary Schools in the state as a way to integrate STEM curriculum standards into the garden learning.
