Presently, Kaunakai El’s school garden program is in a partnership with the Hui Au Ola Medical Center located right next to the school. Students in grades K-6 have access to the garden program. Components of the program include a greenhouse, hydroponics, and a vegetable garden. Students come to the school with their families on saturdays to harvest food which can be taken home with them. Families rotate so that all can take advantage of the harvests. The garden has provided educational opportunities in many subjects. Math skills are practiced by observing the number of seeds sown, the number of plants planted from those seeds, the area of the beds used and the resulting yields. On Molokai, water use and distribution is a very politically and culturally charged issue, the gardens have helped the children to understand this debate more intimately on many levels. Future plans include the inclusion of natural resource experts and more organizations collaborating with the project.
