School Gardens are integrally woven into the Waldorf curriculum with a paid full-time school garden coordinator. Haleakala-Waldorf is presently harvesting from their gardens for the school lunch program. Vegetables, fruit trees, and edible Hawaiian plants are grown outside each grade level building and often used for snacks. The school is looking at the use of grey water in its gardening program and is growing organic plant starts to sell at their Farmer’s Market. Haleakala-Waldorf has joined the Maui Biodynamic group and is connecting with the local farming community promoting Biodynamics. Last year the school began looking at pollinators by bringing in a bee hive to add to the garden program. As such it is a model school for the island in terms of bee keeping education.
