At Hui Malama Learning Center the school garden program this year is centered on food systems and the principles of the national farm to school movement. Math, science, and career development curriculum follows along with what is learned in the garden. Middle and high school students tend the garden weekly, and share in the daily watering chores. The students have been learning gardening and composting techniques from their involvement with Community Work Day and other guest presenters. The garden program is carefully integrated into a nutrition program that teaches the students how to prepare nutritious meals and snacks from their garden produce. In 2012 HMLC will be participating in an Agricultural Entrepreneurship program where the students will be learning a variety of skills from carpentry (building a new garden shed) to the creation of Value Added products and grant writing.
