In 2011 middle and high school students from Hana School began working at the 5 acre community garden, Mahele Farm, on a bi-weekly basis. Elementary students have a small garden plot on the school campus. The Mahele Farm project aligns with the National Tropical Botanical Garden mission of education and community involvement. Chickens were introduced at the end of 2011. Tests are being conducted using biochar and organic composting methods on 1/2 acre of vegetables, herbs and kalo. Future plans include the addition of orchards with lycee, mango, banana and other tropical fruits. A major goal is for the students to take home fresh fruits and vegetables to help change the family diets in positive ways.
