Description:
Overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Mala O Haiku (the Garden of Haiku) rests on the campus of Haiku Elementary School. The garden is filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, and herbs; all surrounded by flowers and river rocks. This organic garden was developed with four primary goals: 1) teaching the children about sustainability and stewardship, (2) enhancing the beauty of Haiku’s school grounds, (3) engaging students in a hands-on project for a broader learning experience, and (4) creating an aesthetically pleasing garden while teaching children the process of planting a seed, growing it into healthy food, and taking it to the table. Fencing has been provided by Haiku Community Center. Curriculum is drawn from the Junior Master Gardener program and the experience of the student garden coordinator. Vegetable compost from the school kitchen goes into the garden. Community Work Day has worked closely with the school garden coordinator to gather commitments from local restaurants and businesses in the area such as Upcountry Fitness and Lilikoi Grill who have pulled together to fund the part time School Garden Coordinator’s salary.
