Seed Saving Workshop and Order Your Seeds NOW!

Now that we are coming to the end of the school year, the question of saving seeds arises.
The following are sources can help!
(1) Seed Saving Workshop this week, Tuesday evening, May 10, from 6:30-9:00 pm at the Mayor Hannibal Tavares Community Center Pool Room. Bring overly mature vegetable plants from which to extract seeds.  The program, “An Introduction to Seed Saving with Evan Ryan”, sponsored by the Upcountry Sustainability group,  should provide you with valuable details on seed saving.  Ryan is a Maui resident who has spent the past 12 years as a permaculture designer, farmer, project manager, and educator. For further information about this event, you may contact Upcountry Sustainability chair, Melanie Stephens, at 573-9260.
(2) Additional information is available in this booklet from the Organic Seed Alliance.

(3) Ed Mahoney of Sacred Hearts School in Lahaina has some organic seeds to offer you as well-Indian corn, white navy beans, and hawaiian ipu gourd seeds.  You may contact Ed at edmahoney underscore 2000 at

(4) Please send a list to me of your seed planning for next fall.  The Community Work Day program and the Maui School Garden Network should be able to get organic seeds ordered for you at little or no cost to your school, but only if we know in advance as in “before you leave for your summer vacation” or June 15 whichever is earlier.
